The what to pack of the 'How to pack' process

Stage 1: Planning what to pack

Think through each day of your trip and note your activities and if your luggage carry on will be with you or not - add in a couple of senarios for out of the blue / serendipidous activities too. Plan out your clothes with these in mind - watersports? Sun shirt insect repelant? urban/outdoortrek?. If you can't think of how to pack an item it's possible not suited to traveling. Stage 3: Revise the what and how to pack stages

Are you happy with your packing efforts - weigh your carry on luggage and check your are within limits (the table on the right will help - always check with your airline to be sure!). If your cutting it fine or just wanting to travel with light baggage expect to make 3 to 4 repacks. Be tough with your self remember it's called carry on luggage because you'll be carrying it everywhere. Typically people realise after a trip that they didnt need half the packed items.

How to pack clothes for luggage carry on only or checked baggage

There are 4 main school of thought on how to pack for optimum bag space, here they are in ascending order toward the most anal-retentive.

1. How to pack by stuffing

If you have been overly successful in stage one you might goes for this, the most relaxed version of packing. As it sounds, you have plenty of room and can afford to just jam your travel gear in. Be warned - even when going 'the suff' remember that your luggage or baggage may take a couple of hard knocks - your fellow passengers may not be as considerate as you - always bury your breakables inside layers of protective clothing - line up any shoes at the edge of your packing so as to take any impacts.

2. How to pack by folding

The most mainstream of the packers will simple fold their clothes and neatly pack the baggage. Some creasing at fold edges and wrinkling will occur ( important for business travellers). Other rules for keeping breakables or electronic equipment central in bags goes with the fold method. The traditional fold method is most popular as it balances space with accessibility. The follow method can increase free space from 10% to 20% but will increase time for accessing items by 20% - 80%.

3. How to pack using The roll method

A favourite with backpackers and hikers. All clothes are rolled up (this has some success in preventing creases in the clothes). Once you have a whole bunch of 'clothing newspapers' (all rolled up) you start the jigsaw of packing the bag - everything nice and snug - fill all the gaps and keep it all as tight as possible. Extreme rollers have been known to fill shoes with rolled clothes.

4.How to pack using Bundling

Only for the hardcore and those who overloaded on shopping during their trip. Bundling extreme packing and can free up 20% more space (as claim by proponents of the sport). To Bundle pack your baggage you would follow these steps (1) layout one longsleeve shirt - flat (2) Over the top of this shirt layout another shirt but upside down - so the sleeve are over the top of the base shirt but the bodies of the shirts are at opposite ends (3) lay flat a pair of long pants from the centre chest of the shirts outwards along one of the sleeves (4) in the centre lay a package of other items - (a Caribee document wallet or Global organiser or bundle of underwear and socks) (5) Now the clothes are going to wrap around this central bundle - 1st the pants 2nd the top shirts, sleeves first then the body 3rd the base shirt - sleeves then body - you should be now left with a tightly wrapped bundle - this (is claimed) to reduce wrinklng and creasing of clothes and to reduce storage space of the items. Though as you should guess this would increase significantly packing and unpacking of items. The final stage of bundling requires luggage or baggage with internal comression straps to hold the bundles in place.
