What to put in your hand luggage.

[1] Security: Keep your important travel documents with you or in your hand luggage at all times (and not in checked baggage!). Hand luggage must-have items are: Passport / travellers cheques / photocopy of passport ID page / photocopy of credit cards / list of international credit card lost/stolen phone numbers (Get the phone numbers - lost/stolen Visa card international help phone number) (Get lost/stolen Mastercard international help phone numbers) - please note - always keep photocopies and phone numbers separately from the actually items eg if your credit cards are in your hand luggage the photocopies must be elsewhere - having photocopies make it extremely easier to report/ replace these items - (Carry some traveller's cheques in case of theft! save the serial numbers online (maybe in an email just incase you loose your hand luggage and baggage)- they are all you need to get them replaced / cashed).
[2] Comfort: Besides thrombosis socks and some basic toiletries in your hand luggage why not take hand sanitiser or some type of wet wipe - they can increase comfort significantly on long haul flights.Your hand luggage does need to be your home away from home after all. A favourite snack treat can also go down well.

[3] Entertainment: not all flights have movies on demand - an personal music / video player can go a longway to releaving bordom - audio book on an mp3 player are terrific also. (look for hand luggage with organiser panels or a Caribee Global organiser). A must if keeping expensive electronics is hand luggage with lockable zips.
